Celebrating 20 Years at the Main Library
2006-2026
For twenty years, the Main Library has anchored civic life in San Mateo. Here, we revisit its opening and milestones, share moments from past celebrations, and invite the community to take part in shaping what the next chapter will hold.
2006: When the doors opened
In 2006, the Main Library opened as a new public landmark for San Mateo. Designed as a welcoming and accessible civic space, it quickly became a place where residents gathered not only to borrow books, but to meet, study, learn, and spend time together.
2016: Ten years later
In 2016, the Library marked its 10th anniversary with both celebration and reflection. Music filled the lobby. Cake was shared. Taiko drummers performed. Families gathered alongside longtime residents, and even familiar mascots made an appearance.
The milestone also created space to listen. Through StoryCorps interviews, community members recorded personal memories of the Library and what it had come to represent in their lives. The anniversary was joyful, but it also affirmed something steady: the Main Library had become a trusted civic space woven into the city’s daily rhythm.
2026: Carrying It Forward
That steadiness now moves into its twentieth year. The 20th anniversary begins with Generations Day, a full-day gathering that invites the community back into the building to celebrate, reflect, and take part in what comes next. Traditions from earlier milestones will return, alongside new opportunities to connect across generations and contribute to the Library’s evolving story.
During Generations Day, visitors are invited to view the timeline exhibition A Place for Everyone’s Story: The San Mateo Public Library, 1883–2026 in the Main Library lobby and add their reflections to the engagement wall.
For twenty years, the Main Library has remained open, accessible, and steady through changing seasons of life. Its future will be shaped by how the community continues to gather, learn, and participate within its walls. The next chapter depends on continued care and support, ensuring this place remains here for whatever comes next.
